I’ve called Punggol home since 2004, when I purchased my HDB unit through the Sale of Balance Flat exercise. Back then, we had to physically queue at the HDB office in Toa Payoh to get a number for flat selection. Punggol was a far cry from what it is today – a quiet, newly developed town with little more than farmland remnants and the scent of chicken farms in the air. Over time, I’ve witnessed an extraordinary transformation, and I’m excited to share just how much has changed.
A New Beginning: Connectivity and Convenience
When I first moved to Punggol, Bus 83 was the only public transport connecting us to Compass Point (now Compass One) in Sengkang – the nearest shopping mall at the time. It wasn’t until 2016, when Waterway Point opened, that Punggol got its very own mall. Since then, we’ve seen the completion of various developments, from Punggol Safra to One Punggol, which houses a large hawker centre and a library, and Oasis Terraces, home to a polyclinic.

There’s more to come as well – the Cross Island Line (CRL) is currently under construction, set to boost connectivity by 2030. (source: Land Transport Guru)
The Punggol Regional Sports Centre is also in the works, which will further enhance the lifestyle options here.
Nature and Wildlife: A Daily Escape
Punggol’s transformation isn’t just about new buildings and facilities – nature continues to play a big role in the charm of this estate. One of my favorite things to do is take morning walks along Punggol Waterway. It’s common to encounter wildlife like long-tailed macaques, wild boars, otters, and monitor lizards. Recently, I even spotted three hornbills! Coney Island is just a short trip away, offering more chances to reconnect with nature.
Education Hub: Schools in Punggol
Punggol is an ideal place for families, with a wide variety of educational institutions nearby. Currently, there are 11 primary schools, 4 secondary schools, and 9 MOE Kindergartens, not to mention numerous childcare centres for young families. We’re also home to two international schools – the Global Indian International School and One World International School. On top of that, the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) recently opened its new campus at Punggol Digital District, reinforcing the area’s growth as a vibrant educational hub.
Foodie Haven: Eateries in Punggol
When it comes to food, Punggol offers something for everyone. My family loves visiting Whisk and Paddle at Tebing Lane (near Riveria LRT) for pizzas, pastas, and their signature waffle with ice cream. If we’re in the mood for seafood, Uncle Leong’s at the same location never disappoints. Rise and Grind at Oasis Terraces is our go-to for mushroom chicken chop, while One Punggol’s hawker centre serves up an array of delicious local dishes. For something more indulgent, Haidilao at Northshore has become a popular spot for steamboat. Waterway Point, of course, hosts a wide selection of eateries too, making it easy to satisfy any craving.
